Strategic Management

STEM K12 15: School/program engages in a continuous improvement process for STEM.

Impact Narrative:

Since 2017, F.L. Stanton’s STEM program has continually grown and made significant progress. Each year, we:

  • Engage in more intentional professional development to ensure that we are building teacher capacity and STEM knowledge.

  • Offer more enrichment opportunities based on student interest to increase students’ opportunities to engage in STEM processes.

  • Offer more STEM-related extracurricular activities that aid in improving students in STEM skills beyond the instructional day.

  • Continually increased the quality of our PBLs by using the Critical Friends model and feedback from the district Math & Science Specialists and the District STEM Coordinator.

  • FLS sustained several stable community partnerships.

  •  Branded our signature program and continually developed a STEM culture.

  • Host quarterly PBL Showcases to provide scholars the opportunity to articulate their knowledge of the Engineering Design Process and use of Cross-Cutting Concepts and 21st Century Skills.

Areas of Strength:

Areas of Opportunity:

Areas of improvement include providing volunteer or stipend summer work sessions with teachers, partners, and stakeholders to perform the pre-work associated with STEM programming. During this work session, the team will create a calendar of PBLs that are in alignment with the units of study in Science and Math, Makerspace activities, STEM-related field trips, as well as STEM enrichment activities such as the Atlanta Science Festival will be added to ensure implementation to the 2022-2023 strategic plan.

Initiatives/Actions:

  • Maintained an active STEM Committee for the last four years.

  • FLS continually engages in Professional Development led by district-level leaders and participates in school visits where schools are implementing effective, certified STEM programs.

  • Leadership continually seeks and cultivates sustainable partnerships and includes more expert collaboration in our PBLs and STEM enrichment activities.
